Everyone Wins

Productive, successful agreements require skilled negotiations.

Well-trained negotiators get more of what they want for themselves, their jobs, and their organizations, while still promoting durable agreements.  The goal of negotiation is not winner take all, but rather that everyone wins.

In order for negotiations to be effective, they should be seen as a conference, as opposed to a contest or a confrontation.  When you effectively negotiate, you strengthen relationships with clients and increase your ability to communicate.  The reverse is true too.

Negotiation aids teamwork in that win-win outcomes enhance all group interactions. The better that you can satisfy needs, the more easily you'll be able work together with others.  Teamwork is the result of negotiation.

How can you benefit from skillful negotiation?
- Become more successful at making effective, lasting deals.
- Get more of what you want out of life.
- By satisfying others' needs, you strengthen your relationship.
- The better your relationships, the better your chance of future teamwork/business.

Some Pointers For Successful Negotiations:
- Learn about the other person in advance.
- Talk about commonalities.
- Calm each side, define and deal with the issues rather than emotions.
- Start with agreement on small issues.  Set the stage for cooperation.
- Prepare to be flexible.  Flexibility establishes trust and collaboration.
- Ensure that the other person gets a good deal and truly believes it.

Until next time...
